Descripción

The Sorbitol Intolerance Test consists of ingesting a solution containing this sweetener, followed by collecting breath samples every 30 minutes for 3 and a half hours (210 minutes in total).
Under normal conditions, sorbitol is absorbed in the small intestine. When this does not happen, it passes to the colon, where it is fermented by intestinal bacteria that produce gases such as hydrogen and methane. These gases enter the bloodstream and are eliminated through exhaled air, allowing them to be detected with a breath test.
Thanks to this test, it is possible to confirm if sorbitol malabsorption is the cause of your digestive discomfort and guide a personalized dietary treatment.

¿Is it suitable for me?

This test is for you if:
• You suspect sorbitol intolerance and experience symptoms such as abdominal pain, gas, or diarrhea after consuming it.
• You often eat fruits like apples, pears, plums, or “sugar-free” products (candies, chewing gum) and notice digestive discomfort.
• You want to rule out rarely detected intolerances that can be mistaken for other disorders.

Sample type: Breath

Includes: Voucher to attend a center for sample collection

How does it work?

Frequently Asked Questions

What foods usually contain sorbitol?

Sorbitol is naturally present in fruits such as apples, pears, or plums, and is used as a sweetener in "light" or "sugar-free" products like chewing gum, candies, and baked goods.

Is it a painful test?

No, it is a simple and non-invasive test. You will only need to blow into collection tubes at regular intervals after ingesting the solution.

Can I take the test if I am undergoing medical treatment?

It depends on the treatment. Some medications (such as antibiotics or probiotics) can alter the result. It is important to discuss this with your doctor before taking the test.

Can the test be confused with other intolerances?

Each test measures the absorption of a specific sugar. Although the symptoms may be similar to those of other intolerances (lactose, fructose, etc.), the result is specific to sorbitol.

Is this test useful to confirm irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)?

It does not diagnose IBS, but it helps to rule out if your symptoms are related to sorbitol malabsorption.
